Heavy Equipment Mechanic

You are a self-motivated, team player with robust communication skills and a strong focus on safety. Proficient in problem-solving and troubleshooting electrical and hydraulic issues on a variety of machines. You are knowledgeable in welding, hydraulics, and machining and are comfortable working alone in diagnosing emergency breakdowns.

You have at least five years of verifiable heavy equipment mechanical experience, are willing to work shiftwork, weekends and call-ins when needed and are able to support other plant maintenance activities and teams when necessary. As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you will be responsible for the preventative maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of our vast array of mobile equipment. Your ability to prioritize and communicate effectively will be key to success in this role.
In an ideal world, you have a Class 1 driver’s license with experience in welding, hydraulics, machining, and knowledge of Sennebogen (Woodyard material handler), Volvo and Cat equipment.
You have your journeyperson Heavy Equipment Mechanic certification, and a second trade would be the “icing on the cake”.

Wood Yard Supervisor

Port Hawkesbury Paper is currently seeking an individual for the position of Wood Yard Supervisor. This position reports to the Woodlands Manager and is responsible to supervise activities associated with wood receiving and wood storage in the company’s Wood Yard and providing for the safe and efficient operation of the Scale House and Wood Yard. 

Responsibilities:

  • Management of the Wood Yard Operators (including scheduling and supervision)
  • Ensure safety practices are known and implemented (by employees and contractors)
  • Plan the storage of forest products in the Wood Yard
  • Ensure accurate data recording of products delivered to the Wood Yard
  • Measure, maintain and report Wood Yard product inventories
  • Coordination of biomass deliveries, reports and audits
  • Fibre quality standard sampling (chips, pulpwood, biomass) and follow-up
  • Deliver site indoctrination to ensure familiarity with safe operations for anyone entering the Wood Yard
  • Work closely with Woodroom regarding delivery and quality requirements
  • Work closely with representatives from Nova Scotia Power with regard to biomass supply
  • Coordinate yard housekeeping and maintenance
  • Organization and supervision of contractors in the Wood Yard (chippers and grinders)
  • Perform duties as instructed by the Woodlands Manager

Experience/Education Requirements:

  • Post-secondary forestry education – Diploma from a Forestry Technical/Technological program
  • Two years of experience in a similar role would be an asset.

  • Ability to work safely in a team environment
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • The ability to manage change effectively with strong multi-tasking ability
  • Working knowledge of MS Office software

Woodyard Operator

Port Hawkesbury Paper is currently seeking a motivated and skilled individual to join our Woodyard team as a Heavy Equipment Operator.  This full-time position is responsible for the unloading and management of wood and wood chip products in PHP’s woodyard.  It involves shiftwork (4 days on - 4 days off rotational schedule involving both day and night shifts) and the safe, efficient operation of mobile equipment. 

The ideal candidate must be a team player who is capable of performing safely in a highly technical and flexible work environment.

Skills/Competency Requirements:

  • Ability to work safely and independently in a fast-paced work setting
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Strong communication skills
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and time management skills
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Flexibility to work overtime

Experience/Education Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of experience operating heavy equipment
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Post-secondary education is considered an asset
  • Must pass a depth perception test
